About Lochlyn...
Welcome to the internet home of Lochlyn Shelties. We are located in Georgia in the middle of 30 beautiful acres in a National Forest. Besides the shelties we also have miniature horses and 4 very spoiled house cats! I have been active in the hobby/sport of breeding and showing dogs for almost 30 yrs. I first started with Collies when I was 14 yrs old. I started out with Collies from Ben & Joyce Houser of Twin Creeks Collies. I bought and finished 2 Collies from them. I later began handling Collies for others and switched to Australian Cattledogs for my new breed. In devoting the needed time to Collie clients, I found the wash n go Cattle dogs much easier for me to breed and show. I bred and finished several Australian Cattle Dogs. And successfully campaigned 2 of my own specials to many breed and group wins, including several group firsts.
My introduction to shelties began as a handler. I finished many wonderful shelties for their owners. During that time I had the pleasure of showing as a puppy, and finishing as an adult Ch. Primrose Stonerhaven Secret. I also started out “Secret’s” specials career, where as a team we won Specialty BOB’s, all breed BOB’s, and Group placements including a Group I. Around this time I decided I just had to start breeding Shelties of my own, so to avoid conflicts I ended my career as a handler. “Secret’s” owners Bob & Tina Stoner then turned her over to Guy Mauldin who took her to the top! "Secret" finally went on to be known as... BIS Ch. Primrose Stonerhaven Secret CD AX AXJ ROM CC.
Lochlyn Shelties began when I purchased 2 older sheltie bitches that were just being wasted in the home they were in. One was a gorgeous headed tri color bitch by Ch. Banchory Classic Image ROM. I went on to finish “Treasure” with Specialty wins to become Ch. Vanity’s Precious Moment. I then bred her to a dog with a beautiful face, Ch. Crystalove Spellbound, from that litter came “my heart dog”...”Vegas” Ch. Lochlyn Las Vegas. The other older bitch that I bought was a very lean headed and sound blue bitch called “Angel” Leoden’s Takes Your Breath Away. “Angel” was a daughter of Ch. Leoden’s Jack Daniels, with another old Banchory pedigree. I managed to get 9pts, 1 major on “Angel” before I just had to breed her because of her age. I decided I had to breed this bitch to another great dog that was also getting up in years, the wonderful blue dog, Ch. Cameo Farms Purple Rain. I had the pleasure of seeing this dog in person in his advanced age, and I will never forget the quality and presence of “Prince”. He remains today as one of my all time favorite shelties. So even though I knew this would be my only chance to get a litter out of “Angel” I forged on with my blue to blue mating of 2 older dogs! The results, one double merle bitch and one blue bitch. That blue bitch was named “Steffi” Lochlyn Light Rain. At that point I knew what breeding was next! I bred the get of the 2 original bitches together... Ch. Lochlyn Las Vegas to Lochlyn Light Rain which in turn gave me the stunning....Lochlyn In Your Dreams “Stevie”. This bitch is now behind every sheltie at Lochlyn.
For those that wonder I did “temporarily” jump into sables. About the time I stopped handling I got the bug to breed and show a sable that I could finish and special. I found a sable bitch for sale and I convinced a client at the time, Nancy Ager (Starphire) to purchase this bitch for breeding. I was signed on as co-owner of “Blondie”, Saranac Golden Tender (Ch. Barwood Legal Tender dau). The search for the sire of the new SPECIAL was on. The sire was selected for his outstanding showy temperament and forward movement, he was a young dog that had just finished and was starting his specials career, Ch. Linden Keynote Takin It Easy. The result was a showy, happy puppy named “Rachael”. “Rachael” was very easy to train and when she turned 6 mos I took her on the road. I believe I put a major and most of her singles on her, and then she was turned over to Julie Desy & team where she finished fast. This was around the same time I decided I was going to apply to judge, so I signed off as co-owner of “Rachael”, knowing she would have a tremendous career ahead of her. Nancy then let Julie Desi and team take "Rachael" on the road and she became BIS/BISS Ch. Starphire Lochlyn Takin Over 3CC (multi AOM ASSA). And I believe she is still the top winning bitch in the history of the breed.
In December 1996 I was approved by AKC to judge Shelties, Collies and Australian Cattle Dogs. And in Sept of 1998 I added 3 more breeds Australian Shepherds, Old English Sheepdogs and Pembroke Welsh Corgis. Since that time I have enjoyed judging at shows in many states including Hawaii. The assignments I enjoy the most are the Specialty shows. Its always a thrill when you step into a ring and are given the privilege of examining some of the best shelties that breeders have to offer. What I look for when judging... first and foremost is Type. From the overall outline and balance, to the precisely detailed head, with a beautiful face/expression, and of course a set of legs that can move the animal around the ring without alot of wasted motion. What faults bother me the most... wide backskulls, deep heads, unpleasant face/expression, and weak rears (cowhocks). Every time I enter the ring I am hopeful that there will be at least one sheltie that is so beautiful that it will take my breath away! As far as colors go, at home I prefer working with AOAC's but when judging I have NO preference for a certain color. I have put up my share of sables.
A good Sheltie is a good sheltie!
